What is the difference between KuroNote and KuroNote Server?+

KuroNote is the app for writing notes on your phone. KuroNote Server is an encrypted sync service you can choose as KuroNote's storage; it enables the computer browser version, backups and the end-of-life features. Using the phone alone, without KuroNote Server as the storage, is free with your own cloud such as Dropbox / Google Drive / OneDrive.

Can support restore my notes or images?+

No. KuroNote encrypts on the device and keeps only ciphertext on the server. We cannot read the text, the images or the encryption keys, and we cannot recover anything if you lose every passkey and the recovery code. Register passkeys on more than one device and keep the recovery code somewhere safe.

What should I do when I change phones?+

Open KuroNote on the new device and carry the key over by approving from an existing device, by a synced passkey, or with the recovery code. Always confirm the notes open on the new device before you reset or let go of the old one.

Notes are not syncing, or I cannot find them+

First check your connection, and that every device uses the same storage and the same account. If the notes matter, export a backup if you can (KuroNote Server subscribers only) before making more edits or deletions on the device with the problem. If that does not help, contact us with your device, OS and app version and what is happening.

How do I take a backup?+

The computer / browser version of KuroNote exports every note and image as a ZIP. Opening index.html inside the ZIP in a browser shows the contents with no app needed. The backup is decrypted, plain files, so take care where you keep it. Always export before cancelling, changing devices or resetting a device — and confirm you can open the ZIP and read it.

Where do I check the price or cancel?+

The KuroNote Server subscription and its payment are managed by the App Store or Google Play you got KuroNote from. Deleting the app does not cancel it. See “Cancellation and data deletion” below for the steps and for what happens afterwards.

If this did not solve it, get in touch

Tell us as much detail as you can. Your mail app opens with a message prepared from what you enter.

Please do not include sensitive information

Do not send passkeys, recovery codes, sign-in email verification codes, or the contents of notes and images. KuroNote is encrypted by design, so support cannot decrypt or restore them even if received.

If you cannot use a mail app, write directly to support@kuro.boo.

You can review the message in your mail app before sending.

Before you cancel

Cancellation and data deletion

How your data is handled differs completely depending on whether the phone version of KuroNote stores to “KuroNote Server” or to another cloud. Start by checking which applies to you.

1. KuroNote only

Using only KuroNote on your phone (free)

Free KuroNote uses your own external cloud — Dropbox / Google Drive / OneDrive — as its storage (if you have not chosen one, notes are kept inside this device only). Keeping and deleting data is managed by that storage and by what you do in KuroNote.

If you want to keep your data

Files in each cloud follow that cloud's own storage and backup settings. Before resetting the device or deleting the app, confirm that the notes open in KuroNote and that the data is present in the cloud.

If you want to erase your data

Delete it from KuroNote or from the cloud itself. Removing the app from the device does not delete the data in the external cloud. Support can neither delete nor restore data in an external cloud.

2. KuroNote subscription

Subscribed to KuroNote Server

Cancelling does not erase data straight away. What happens after you cancel depends on whether the app’s “End-of-life features” are on or off. [Off] Your account and the notes on your device stay; only the data held on KuroNote Server is deleted 90 days after the subscription ends. [On] The 60 days from when the end of the subscription is confirmed become the closing period, after which the whole account is deleted — not only the data on the server, but also the notes inside your devices. Resubscribe during the closing period, or turn the end-of-life features off in the app, and the account stays usable (on the first launch after a cancellation, the app always asks whether to turn them off). The “last letter” is sent once the number of days you chose (5–50, 15 by default) has passed after the closing period begins. If a family handover code is used during the closing period, every note not marked for family is deleted immediately. Resubscribing does not bring back notes that have already been deleted.

Do this first

Export a backup from the computer / browser version, and confirm it opens.

Cancelling before exporting does not delete anything immediately, but KuroNote is end-to-end encrypted, so support cannot restore notes or images. Keep the ZIP somewhere safe and open index.html to check your notes and images.

1. Cancel in the store

Deleting the app does not cancel

From the subscription management screen of the Apple ID or Google account you purchased with, select KuroNote and cancel.

2. Until the end date

Access continues to the end of the billing period

Cancelling stops the automatic renewal. Normally you can keep using it until the end of the period you already paid for, and there is no pro-rata refund.

3. 60 days after the end (end-of-life features on)

The whole account is deleted after the closing period

With the end-of-life features on, the 60 days from when the end of the subscription is confirmed are the closing period. Resubscribe or turn the features off within that time and everything stays usable. After it, the whole account is deleted, including the notes inside your devices. With the features off, your account and on-device notes stay, and only the data held on the server is deleted after 90 days.

What is deleted when the closing period ends with the end-of-life features on

  • Notes and attached images synced to KuroNote Server
  • The encrypted data on KuroNote, and the authentication and key material needed to access it (the account itself)
  • The KuroNote notes inside your devices (erased once the device learns the account has been deleted)
  • The scheduled “last letter” registered in KuroNote (sending is attempted before deletion, then it is deleted)

Because of end-to-end encryption, we cannot restore the data either before or after deletion. Backup copies in your own cloud such as Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive are not covered by this deletion — please check the settings and deletion state of each of those yourself. With the end-of-life features off, your account and on-device notes stay, and only the data held on the server is deleted after 90 days.

Take care when using a family handover code during the closing period. Notes without the family mark are deleted immediately at that point. Only notes with the family mark can be viewed and exported during the retention period. Note that the family handover code cannot be used during a normal subscription period.
