KuroNote

1. KuroNote (free)

Using KuroNote on your phone

Free KuroNote keeps your notes inside this device. You can take a backup to your own cloud (Dropbox / Google Drive / OneDrive) — it is not sync, so backing up and restoring both happen only when you press the button. This is what changes the outcome when you switch devices.

No backup

Notes cannot be moved by switching devices

Notes are stored encrypted inside the device only. There is no copy anywhere else, so a broken or lost device, or deleting the app, loses the notes. Before switching, connect a cloud and take a backup.

Backup to your cloud (free)

You can restore on the new device

Connect any one of Dropbox / Google Drive / OneDrive and press “Back up” to copy your notes as they are at that moment. On a new device, connect to the same account of the same cloud and press “Restore from cloud” to get them back (see each item below for the steps and conditions).

Three things to know first

  • “Disconnect” deletes every note stored in that cloud. Do not disconnect on the old device when you switch (notes inside the device stay, but the cloud copy is erased immediately). Once the restore has finished on the new device, simply deleting the app from the old device is enough.
  • On the new device, the very first screen is the fork in the road. Opening KuroNote asks you to choose “Start fresh on this device” or “Add as a second device for an account I already use”. If the old device still works, choosing “Add as a second device” keeps you on the same account. Choosing “Start fresh” creates a different account (cloud backups are plain files, so they can be restored either way). Either way you will need to confirm your email address and create a passkey (the passkey becomes the key that opens your notes).
  • iCloud is not supported. Apple does not offer iCloud Drive for Android, so notes could not sync between iPhone and Android. Even on iPhone, pick Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive.
First, check where your notes are stored+

Open KuroNote settings and check the storage (the cloud you are connected to) and when the last backup was taken.

  • Not connected to any cloud → you are on “This device only”. Go to the next item.
  • Connected to one of them → note down that cloud’s account (the email address) too. On the new device you connect to the same account and press “Restore from cloud”.
  • Backups are taken only when you press the button (never automatically). Press “Back up” on the old device before you switch.
Switch devices while staying on “This device only”+

They cannot be moved as things stand. On “This device only”, your notes exist inside the device alone. If you reset, sell or trade in the old device, the notes cannot be recovered. Do one of the following before switching.

Option 1: back up to a cloud (recommended, free)

  1. In KuroNote on the old device, connect Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive.
  2. Press “Back up”, then confirm in the cloud’s own app or website that files appear in the KuroNote folder.
  3. Install KuroNote on the new device, connect to the same account of the same cloud and press “Restore from cloud”.
  4. Only after the notes appear in the list, reset the old device.

Option 2: subscribe to KuroNote Server

If you want to use several devices and a computer, and do not want us to be able to read anything either, consider KuroNote Server. See switching to KuroNote Server.

If the old device is already gone, there is unfortunately no way to restore. Notes are stored encrypted inside the device only, and we hold no copy.

iPhone / iPad to another iPhone / iPad+

These steps assume a cloud is connected. If not, back up to a cloud first.

  1. Open KuroNote on the old device and press “Back up”. When it finishes, the time of the last backup is updated.
  2. In the cloud (the Dropbox app, Google Drive, OneDrive and so on) open the KuroNote folder and confirm with your own eyes that files are there.
  3. Install KuroNote from the App Store on the new iPhone, open it and complete the first steps (confirming your email address and creating a passkey).
  4. From settings, connect to the same cloud and the same account as the old device (you will be asked to sign in) and press “Restore from cloud”.
  5. Confirm the notes appear in the list.
  6. On the old device, do not disconnect — delete the app, or simply reset the device.

About iCloud backup and Quick Start: even when the device transfer feature restores the app itself, connecting to the cloud (signing in) may have to be redone. If your notes are missing, check the connection in settings, then press “Restore from cloud”.

Android to another Android+

The steps are the same as for iPhone, because what you carry to the new device is the backup in your cloud.

  1. Open KuroNote on the old device and press “Back up”. When it finishes, the time of the last backup is updated.
  2. In the cloud (the Dropbox app, Google Drive, OneDrive and so on) open the KuroNote folder and confirm with your own eyes that files are there.
  3. Install KuroNote from Google Play on the new device, open it and complete the first steps (confirming your email address and creating a passkey).
  4. From settings, connect to the same cloud and the same account as the old device (you will be asked to sign in) and press “Restore from cloud”.
  5. Confirm the notes appear in the list.
  6. On the old device, do not disconnect — delete the app, or simply reset the device.

About manufacturer transfer tools: even when a device-to-device copy moves the app, signing in to the cloud may have to be redone. If notes are not visible, check the storage and account in settings, then press “Restore from cloud”.

iPhone to Android (or the other way round)+

If you have a backup in a cloud, you can switch with exactly the same steps as changing to a device on the same OS, because Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive all work on both iPhone and Android.

  1. Press “Back up” on the old device and confirm the files are in the cloud.
  2. Install KuroNote on the new device and complete the first steps (confirming your email address and creating a passkey).
  3. Connect to the same cloud and the same account, and press “Restore from cloud”.
  4. Only after the notes appear, delete the app from the old device (do not disconnect).

This is exactly why iCloud is not an option. Apple does not offer iCloud Drive for Android, so storing in iCloud would be a dead end at the moment you switch. KuroNote supports only Dropbox / Google Drive / OneDrive so that the same notes open from either OS.

On the free version there is no subscription to think about (the one-time “Remove ads” purchase comes back with “Restore purchases” on the same store account; if you subscribe to KuroNote Server, see these steps instead).

A device was lost, stolen or broke+

Whether the notes come back is decided by whether you had taken a backup.

If you had a backup in a cloud

  1. Install KuroNote on a new device.
  2. Connect the same cloud and the same account and press “Restore from cloud”: you are back to the time of your last backup (changes after that are not restored).

If it was “This device only”

Unfortunately there is no way to get the notes back. Neither we nor any cloud holds a copy.

If someone finds the device: notes are encrypted inside the device as well. With the app lock on (the default), every opening asks for your passkey and the key is not kept on the device. Unless the device’s screen lock is broken, the contents cannot be read. Cloud backups are plain files, though, so revoke the lost device’s access on the cloud side (your Dropbox / Google / Microsoft account) and change that password if needed.

Selling, giving away or trading in the old device+

Do not press “Disconnect” in KuroNote. Disconnecting deletes every note in the cloud (it asks twice). Doing it before you have finished moving to the new device loses the notes.

  1. Confirm the notes are listed on the new device.
  2. On the old device, delete the KuroNote app (delete — not disconnect).
  3. In the cloud account settings, revoke the old device’s link if you want to.
  4. Reset the device (erase all content and settings / factory reset).

If you really do want to erase the files in the cloud, do it after finishing the move: delete the KuroNote folder from the cloud, or use the app’s disconnect.

Switching to KuroNote Server (subscribing)+

Subscribing is done from KuroNote on your phone (App Store / Google Play payment only — you cannot subscribe from a computer).

  1. In KuroNote settings, choose KuroNote Server as the storage, agree to the terms and subscribe.
  2. Your passkey and email address were registered on first launch, so there is nothing more to register.
  3. From the account section in settings, issue a full recovery code and write it down (it replaces the provisional code emailed to you at first). From here on, losing the key means not even we can restore it.
  4. To use a computer, open the browser version there and approve it from your phone (opening KuroNote on a computer).

After switching you may keep using both KuroNote Server (primary) and a cloud (spare). For later device changes, follow the steps for KuroNote Server subscribers.

Files that were in the cloud before you switched stay where they are. Delete them from that cloud if you no longer need them.

Still need help?

If this did not solve it

Please contact support. Telling us your device, OS and app version, where your notes are stored now (this device only / the cloud’s name / whether you subscribe to KuroNote Server) and which step you are stuck on will get you an answer faster.

Please do not include these in your enquiry

Do not send passkeys, recovery codes, family handover codes, email verification links, or the contents of notes and images. KuroNote is encrypted by design, so support cannot decrypt or restore them even if received.
